Azaleas of Shangri-La
Drawing inspiration from the legendary Shangri-La – a mythical utopia described in the fantasy novel Lost Horizon – Azaleas of Shangri-La transports visitors into an enchanting paradise set against the backdrop of the Himalayas. Taking centre stage for the first time in Cloud Forest, azaleas are admired for their magnificent blooms in brilliant colours. The vibrant landscape featuring over 15 varieties of azaleas in pink, red, yellow, orange and cream, mirrors the equally colourful Himalayan architecture and artefacts on display. Complemented by a collection of traditional medicinal herbs such as lingzhi, cordyceps, beard moss and saffron, as well as flora native to the Himalayan region like rhododendrons and cymbidiums, Azaleas of Shangri-La offers a glimpse of the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Himalayas.

About Azaleas
Belonging to the genus Rhododendron, azaleas are a diverse group of flowering shrubs with hundreds of species and thousands of cultivars. Popular for their vibrant and abundant flowers, attractive foliage, and relatively low maintenance requirements, they are commonly used in gardens and landscapes. In Singapore, azaleas are one of the most popular Chinese New Year plants as their red flowers symbolise good fortune and auspiciousness.
Rhododendron mollis (Deciduous)
Commonly known as Mollis azalea or Korean azalea, Rhododendron mollis is native to East Asia, particularly Korea. Typically a dense, rounded shrub 120 to 180 cm tall, its flowers are large, trumpet-shaped and appear in clusters.
Rhododendron 'Knap Hill' hybrid (Deciduous)
Originating from crosses between various Rhododendron species, Rhododendron ‘Knap Hill’ hybrids were primarily developed at the Knap Hill Nursery in Surrey, England in the late 19th and 20th centuries, hence its name. The plant typically grows as an upright, spreading shrub 120 to 180 cm tall, and its flowers are large, trumpet-shaped and often fragrant.
Rhododendron indica (Evergreen)
Rhododendron indica is native to Asia, particularly in areas like Japan, China and Korea. One of the most commonly cultivated Rhododendron species, its profuse and showy flowers are typically funnel-shaped and appear in clusters at the tips of branches. Generally possessing a rounded or mounding growth habit, it can reach heights of 90 to 180 cm.
Rhododendron simsii (Evergreen)
Commonly known as the Indian azalea, Rhododendron simsii is native to East Asia, particularly China and Japan. It produces clusters of funnel-shaped flowers that are typically fragrant, and is popular for its compact and bushy growth habit reaching heights of 30 to 90 cm.
